Brian Anderson
Easter Island – ‘The Navel of the World’
What better way to escape the winter than with a trip to the South Pacific! Photographer and adventurer Brian Anderson will ‘transport’ us all, via his fascinating illustrated talk, to Easter Island (Rapu Nui) where he recently spent time photographing its key historical and archaeological sites.
He will tell us the amazing story of the Rapanui who settled in this remote place and built the vast Moai statues, of their life on this inhospitable island and of the tragic downfall of their magnificent culture. Bringing us up to date he will tell us about the island’s community today and of their efforts to protect and conserve the unique Rapa Nui cultural legacy stretching back over 800 years. The talk will be richly illustrated with Brian’s stunning photography – a treat not to be missed by ‘armchair travellers’ and lovers of history and geography.

Alison Wakeman
Awareness of Bees and their importance in the Environment
What is the connection between cling film and bees?
‘Take those things away!’ was Alison Wakeman’s initial reaction to bee hives in the garden of a prospective new house. She didn’t buy the house but, ironically, a ‘seed was sown’.
Twenty years later Alison is an expert bee-keeper managing 16-20 colonies and her experiences and knowledge of bees have inspired her award winning educational programmes for primary schools – Alison’s Bee Class. In the spring and summer months Alison can be found at agricultural and community events with her bee educational stand and her award winning live honey bee observational hive. /In addition Alison is not only a popular speaker to adult groups but she has also developed a successful eco-friendly bee by-product business. Alison will tell us all about bees, why they are so important to our environment and how they may help provide an alternative to a planet damaging product.

A Grandmother's Legacy: The Early Days of a British Raj Family
Jenny Malin, an award winning author, delivered an illustrated talk giving a fascinating insight into five generations of her interesting family who lived during the days of the British Raj in India. 'A Grandmother's Legacy' refers to the 170-year old cookbook inherited by Jenny and penned by her great-great-great-grandmother, but her story started with Benjamin Hardy, a Yorkshire weaver, who joined the army and set sail for Madras in 1798.
