Landscape History
Terry Hilder
We seek to explore the local landscape, which is particularly rich in historical
evidence. This may take the form of illustrated presentations indoors in the colder
months or by visiting sites in the warmer period of the year. Participants are
encouraged to do their own research and contribute to the group.
We are particularly interested in Iron Age earthworks, Roman remains, motte and
bailey sites, stone castles, abandoned villages and the development of medieval
churches and villages. Mankind has left many marks on the landscape: it is a ‘document’ that has much to tell us about the past. The aim of this course is to open a window upon this fascinating resource.
Meetings take place on the second Wednesday of the months from February to November. In colder months they are held indoors in the morning at Guy Thornycroft Court, Tollgate Road, Ludlow, SY8 1TL, sometimes extending to a site visit in the afternoon.

Steam and Heritage Railway Group
Ken Tyler
Share your memories of the steam era, discuss current heritage railway news and occasionally we organise visits to heritage railway branch lines. Slide shows or audio visual digital presentations are shown on a big screen TV. We meet on the second Tuesday of the month at Burgess Court, Gravel Hill, Communal lounge, or peoples homes.
