Armchair Traveller
Geoff Wright
Travel the world from the comfort of your armchair. First Monday mornings monthly. We learn about different places or countries that our members have visited. Discussions ensue, not only of the places themselves, but also, we learn a little of the customs, geography and people that live there. Sometimes we have power point presentations, or screen pictures on the television. Other times we use books, postcards and maps to help with the talk.

Cryptic Crosswords
Sue Curthoys
Group meets on the 2nd & 4th Monday afternoons
Our aim is to develop crossword solving skills, by doing at least one crossword together at each meeting, in a relaxed, enjoyable and mutually helpful way. A further crossword is provided for solving between meetings (with additional clues and guidance available if needed).
A ‘crib sheet’ is also provided, which identifies some of the more common crossword clue words and indicators and their uses. This is added to and updated on an on-going basis as a means of developing personal crossword solving skills at all levels (from beginners upwards).
Interestingly, nearly 30 years ago a study showed that, on average, those who keep mentally active in retirement live 4 years longer than those who don’t, and a recent study not only confirmed this, but also showed that physical exercise such as brisk walking and mental activity such as doing cryptic crosswords can help stave off age-related brain decline!

Etymology
Simon Allison
Studying the meaning and origins of words and their use. Third Thursday morning monthly.
Do you enjoy word puzzles in newspapers and magazines? Does it interest you that English spelling and pronunciation are so complicated – just think of the different ways we say “ough” in dough, cough, slough, tough? Join our group if you are interested in these and the ways in which the meanings of words have changed throughout history.
