Landscape History
Terry Hilder
We seek to explore the local landscape, which is particularly rich in historical
evidence. This may take the form of illustrated presentations indoors in the colder
months or by visiting sites in the warmer period of the year. Participants are
encouraged to do their own research and contribute to the group.
We are particularly interested in Iron Age earthworks, Roman remains, motte and
bailey sites, stone castles, abandoned villages and the development of medieval
churches and villages. Mankind has left many marks on the landscape: it is a ‘document’ that has much to tell us about the past. The aim of this course is to open a window upon this fascinating resource.
Meetings take place on the second Wednesday of the months from February to November. In colder months they are held indoors in the morning at Guy Thornycroft Court, Tollgate Road, Ludlow, SY8 1TL, sometimes extending to a site visit in the afternoon.

Latin for beginners
Robert Hodge
Those who are completely new to Latin and those who have a little knowledge from schooldays are welcome, as are those who can happily translate ‘et sedit super tapete cattus’ or even the misquote ‘magna est veritas et praevalebit’. Sessions will be held on the first and third Mondays of each month, in the afternoon. The group will use a combination of a Latin primer (which members will have to buy) and material that will be provided. Grammar will rear its ugly head, but the group will focus on translation and reading Latin texts. To help keep everything in context there will be discussion about the Ancient World, classical Latin authors and occasional visits to read inscriptions and get a taste of life in Roman Britain.

Mah Jong
Judy McNally
Most of the group were complete beginners, and we learned to play by the rules of the British Mah Jong Assn. We were fortunate in meeting a Chinese lady from Sichuan province who now lives in Ludlow, and who taught us a quicker game with simpler rules (as played in China) which most of our members prefer. Some still prefer to play by the British rules. We have about 15 active members in the group, and would welcome any newcomers, even if they have never played before. Mah Jong is a very engaging game, and is excellent for keeping brains well exercised. We meet the first Thursday afternoon monthly.

Natural Environment Group
Jackie Hodgson
We meet monthly to take a leisurely stroll through the local countryside with the intention of exploring the flora and fauna emerging during the different seasons. There is no need for personal expertise but a keen interest in wildlife essential. We share knowledge of local events, related books and helpful apps to improve our skills of identification.
Philosophy & Ethics
Tony Blench
Meetings are held on the third Friday of each month at 10.30am in members’ homes. Each month a member introduces an issue in philosophy and/or ethics as a prelude to open, and hopefully rigorous, discussion. Questions from any of the world’s philosophical traditions and schools are welcome. No formal philosophical education is required, but a critical mind is vital.

Photography
Alan Harvey
This group meets in Ludlow on the last Thursday of the month from 10am until 12 noon, with the exception of July, August and December. We are an enthusiastic and supportive group of amateur photographers with an interest in a wide variety of photographic techniques and styles. Members need to have a camera and also be prepared to print some of their photographs to present to the group. The group undertakes many different projects during the year and also has the opportunity to exhibit their work.
